U.N. committee urges convention to ban cloning of human beings
11/19/2001

New York (dpa) - The U.N. General Assembly's legal committee on Monday adopted a resolution calling for an international convention against cloning human beings.

The resolution will go to the 189-nation assembly for further discussion and is expected to be adopted next month. The resolution was the first step required to begin drafting a convention, which could begin next year.

France and Germany initiated the resolution last summer when the Bush administration wrestled with the issue of funding research on stem cells, which could be used for cloning, but also for treating genetic diseases.

The legal committee decided that an ad hoc committee will meet in February and March to begin writing the mandate. The committee is one of six that work under the assembly. The other committees deal with security, human rights, economy, decolonization and the budget.
