Airline Sues Man Who Breached Atlanta Airport Security
Tue Nov 27 2001 10:09:50 ET

AirTran Holdings Inc.'s low-fare airline AirTran Airways, filed a civil suit against a Gainesville, Ga., man who breached security at Atlanta's airport earlier this month and prompted the temporary shutdown of the facility and the disruption of air traffic and passengers across the country, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Georgia in Atlanta, seeks compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $75,000 from Michael Lasseter. . AirTran and other airlines -- already reeling from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks -- say they lost millions of dollars as a result of the airport shutdown.

Richard Magurno, AirTran's senior vice president and general counsel estimates the Orlando concern's damages exceed $100,000 and said the airline wants to recoup 'out of pocket costs.' In an interview, Mr. Magurno said AirTran's prime motive in bringing the suit against Mr. Lasseter is that the man didn't inform airport officials he breached security after the airport was evacuated.

'He did nothing other than stand outside for four hours with thousands of other travelers. ... That was totally negligent,' Mr. Magurno said, adding, '... we have been damaged and tens of thousands of people were inconvenienced.'"
