 XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SUN DEC 02 2001 15:19:09 ET XXXXX BOOK ROCKS NEWSROOM: CBS VETERAN LABELS STAFF 'DAN RATHER'S BITCHES', DETAILS NETWORK BIAS **Exclusive** Emotions are running high inside of CBS NEWS over the pending release of a tell-all book written by a 28-year veteran of the organization -- a veteran who has documented what he sees as "consistent and outright bias" in the network's news coverage! In BIAS, A CBS INSIDER EXPOSES HOW THE MEDIA DISTORT THE NEWS, reporter Bernard Goldberg, a six-time EMMY award winner, according to the CBS website, rips the lid off what he witnessed inside of the Fishbowl. In the first defection of its kind, Goldberg writes in brutal honesty, zeroing in on CBS NEWS anchor Dan Rather. "If CBS NEWS were a prison instead of a journalistic enterprise, three-quarters of the producers and 100 percent of the vice presidents would be Dan's bitches," Goldberg declares on Page 10. "Look Bernie, of course there's a liberal bias in the news. All the networks tilt left," CBS NEWS President Andrew Heyward is quoted as saying. "Come on, we all know it -- the whole damn world knows it... If you repeat any of this, I'll deny it." The book raced to the top of the AMAZON Bestsellers List this weekend after the DRUDGE REPORT first outlined Goldberg's unprecedented blueprint of media bias as documented by an insider. Goldberg's defection is further evidence the dam is breaking on major media control over information. And now, more details can be revealed. In a chapter titled "Identity Politics", Goldberg writes: "I once asked Susan Zirinksy, a first-rate journalist who had been the CBS EVENING NEWS senior producer in Washington (she's now executive producer of 48 HOURS), how many times she went to conservative women's groups for on-camera reactions either to Supreme Court decisions of to votes in Congress regarding women's issues. She thought about it for a few seconds, then told me she couldn't think of a single time." Goldberg explains: "Zirinksy didn't act out of malice. She didn't conspire with anyone to freeze out conservative women. She just thought NOW was the logical place to go. NOW wasn't a liberal group, to Zirinksy. It was a sensible, reasonable, and rational group." In the chapter "How About A Media That Reflects America?", Goldberg details a 1999 conference call between CBS NEWS producers and reporters -- during which CBS veteran Roxanne Russell refers to Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer as 'the little nut from the Christian group." He writes: "Without a trace of timidity, without any apparent concern for political consequences, Roxanne Russell, sitting at a desk inside the CBS NEWS Washington bureau, nonchalantly referred to this conservative activist as 'Gary Bauer, the little nut from the Christian group'... Those were her exact words. If any of the CBS NEWS producers on the conference call were shocked, not one of them gave a clue." A top CBS NEWS executive blasted Goldberg from New York City. "Bernie Goldberg is a G-ddamn traitor," the executive said late Friday. "The book is trash written by a bitter man who is now determined to settle a score." The stage is set for media fireworks as REGNERY publishing rushes BIAS into print this week.
