Putin's chief of staff under investigation 01/08/2002 Moskau (dpa) - Kremlin chief of staff Aleksandr Voloshin, one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest aides, is being investigated in connection with his former business activities, Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov announced Thursday. He said the probe had been initiated by a number of lawmakers. ;It is no secret that Voloshin has worked within a commercial framework before he joined the public service,'' Ustinov was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency, adding that this was perfectly legal. Putin took over Voloshin as head of the Kremlin administration from his predecessor Boris Yeltsin. In the early 1990s Voloshin worked with companies who were owned by Boris Beresovski. Putin has been removing controversial figures from the Kremlin since his appointment as acting president in December 1999 when Yeltsin unexpectedly resigned. |
