XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX MON JAN 21 2002 11:01:48 ET XXXXX DREAMWORKS VS. MIRAMAX: BATTLE OF THE BEST PICTURE TURNS NASTY DREAMWORKS SKG fires the first public shot on Monday in a behind-the-studio gates battle for Best Picture with controversial claims that rival MIRAMAX [IN THE BEDROOM] has launched a poison campaign against the company's A BEAUTIFUL MIND. 'OSCAR BROUHAHA' splashes the NEW YORK POST in Monday runs, where reporter Nikki Finke outlines claims made by MIND makers which tag MIRAMAX for spreading in the press how the Ron Howard film left out homosexual references in the biography of mathematician John Nash. MONSTER IN THE BEDROOM "Finke quotes a rep from DREAMWORKS [MIND] partner UNIVERSAL, but this is really the guys at DREAMWORKS jump-starting a war!" a top insiders declares. Action flared in '99 when MIRAMAX's SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE battled with DREAMWORKS's SAVING PRIVATE RYAN for top nods. "It's Geffen and Katzenberg starting it up again," notes the well-placed source. "The don't have a best picture this year, UNIVERSAL has domestic rights to BEAUTIFUL MIND. The don't have an actor, an actress. They have a little green monster [SHREK] and a big bag of money... They are going after MIRAMAX hoping to bump off IN THE BEDROOM and land SHREK at the OSCARS!" As first reported in this space last month -- gay scenes found in the book "A Beautiful Mind: The Life of the Mathematical Genius and Nobel Laureate John Nash" have been completely scrubbed, dropped, eliminated from the film, even though actor Russell Crowe's picture is featured on the paperback. Top DREAMWORKS executives accused MIRAMAX of faxing the DRUDGE REPORT to press outlets. Meanwhile, Academy balloting continues. ----------------------------------------------------------- Reports are moved when circumstances warrant http://www.drudgereportArchives.com for updates (c)DRUDGE REPORT 2002 Not for reproduction without permission of the author |
