 WOULD-BE SUICIDE BOMBER SAYS SHE WOULD CONSIDER NOT BECOMING A MARTYR IF ARAFAT WERE TO SPEAK AGAINST SUICIDE BOMBINGS Fri Apr 12 2002 18:19:52 ET NEW YORK -- A young Palestinian mother, arrested by the Israelis for attempting to become a suicide bomber, tells correspondent Elizabeth Palmer she and other suicide bombers would consider halting their activities if Yasir Arafat denounced such actions. Her interview will be broadcast tonight (12) on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH DAN RATHER. A TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW FOLLOWS: ELIZABETH PALMER NARRATION: On the surface Shifa Adnan Kodsi had a lot to live for.. She worked in a beauty parlor, she was young and attractive - and had a 7-year-old daughter. But when Israel invaded the west bank this young woman decided she had to act. No matter the cost to her family and daughter. ...Her answer was to become a suicide bomber: (SOT VOICE OF TRANSLATOR) THE IDEA OCCURRED TO ME A WEEK AGO WHEN I SAW THE MASSACRES WHICH WERE OCCURIRING - ON TELEVISION - THE MASSACRES IN RAMALLAH. 1221 PALMER: Kodsi was arrested two days ago at her parents house in the West Bank - after a tipoff to Israeli intelligence forces.She won't admit any affiliation to any radical Palestinian organization - but does say she reveres Yassir Arafat Kodsi: I DID IT FOR HIM ...BECAUSE OF THE HUMILIATION AND EMBARASSMENT THAT HE WAS EXPOSED TO EVEN THOUGH HE IS A HEAD OF STATE. Although Arafat claims he has fulfilled Israeli and Western demands to denounce suicide bombings...it's not a message that ever reached Kodsi. Kodsi: IF HE EVER DID MAKE SUCH A REQUEST - WE WOULD THINK OF STOPPING...BEFCAUSE AFTER ALL HE IS OUR PRESIDENT AND HE IS OUR LEADER. PALMER: Although she is obviously proud of her seven-year-old daughter - (NAT SOT) - she is very beautiful... PALMER: Kodsi believed her martyrdom in the name of Palestinian revenge was more important than her responsibility as a mother. Kodsi: SHE IS NOT THE FIRST NOR THE LAST TO BE AN ORPHAN. LOTS OF OTHER CHILDREN HAVE LOST BOTH MOTHER AND FATHER. - more - PALMER: The Israeli invasion of the west bank - according to Kodsi - left her very few choices. In despair, having witnessed so much random killing.... she believed that becoming a suicide bomber - as a political act would at least give her own death some meaning....Her message for the parents of today's suicide bomber... I congratulate them 1000 times. END |
