IRS Says Over 700,000 Dodging Taxes

"Many Americans are turning Tax Day into a Christmas of sorts, an occasion for giving gifts to themselves," the WALL STREET JOURNAL reported on Tuesday.
The Internal Revenue Service, "under renewed pressure to examine tax returns more closely to find schemes, scams and cons, released newly-detailed estimates that show how at least 700,000 Americans -- and possibly far more -- are combining to underpay their taxes by tens of billions of dollars."
The numbers are "higher than previously believed, and go beyond the IRS estimate that at least half a million taxpayers, and possibly as many as two million, could be using offshore havens to evade paying taxes." The statistics, "disclosed at a Senate Finance Committee hearing last week, show that tens of thousands of Americans from all walks of life likely are participating in other dodges."
