XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX TUES SEPT 12, 2000 01:49:27 ET XXXXX DRUDGE BANNED IN D.C.; POLITICS & PROSE BOOKSTORE CALLS INTERNET REPORTER 'DANGEROUS', WILL NOT OPEN DOORS DRUDGE REPORT editor Matt Drudge has been banned from appearing at Washington, D.C.'s leading independent bookseller [and Publishers Weekly's 1999 Bookseller of the Year] when his book DRUDGE MANIFESTO is released next month. "He would be an insult to our customers if he read here," a clerk at POLITICS & PROSE said on Monday. "We are going to hide his book in the back when it comes out," the clerk added. Bookstore co-owner Carla Cohen tells Tuesday's WASHINGTON POST that Drudge is being banned from her store because he is a "rumormonger and a troublemaker." "It's a question of sleaze versus careful, thoughtful reporting," said Cohen, who last weekend invited author Dori Carter to POLITICS & PROSE to discuss and read passages from her book BEAUTIFUL WASPS HAVING SEX. In the past, POLITICS & PROSE has sold Holocaust denial literature "mixed in with other Holocaust books." Co-owner Barbara Meade defended the decision, noting that people should know "that opinion" is out there. Cohen [ carla@politics-prose.com, books@politics-prose.com ] explains, "We make editorial decisions based on what our customers are interested in and our own tastes." "Drudge is dangerous, he is not welcome here!" a bookstore sales associate told a customer Monday evening. DRUDGE MANIFESTO, written with bestselling Hollywood author Julia Phillips [YOU'LL NEVER EAT LUNCH IN THIS TOWN AGAIN], will be released October 3, 2000. It reached #1 on AMAZON.COM's non-fiction bestsellers list in late July based on pre-orders. "I've sat back and enjoyed other reporters discuss their work at POLITICS & PROSE for years," said Drudge. "Other reporters who had a role in the Lewinsky story have been welcomed. I was looking forward to sharing my insights on how I broke the story and my visions of the new and exciting world of internet news reporting, which I outline in my book. But I understand how the future may scare some people." [POLITICS & PROSE is located at 5015 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008-2024. Phone: (202)364-1919.] Bookstore co-owner Carla Cohen hit controversy in 1997 when she refused to stock House Majority Leader Dick Armey's books on big government and the flat tax. "I returned every single copy" to the publisher, said Cohen. "I mean, who's going to read those things?" ----------------------------------------------------------- Reports are moved when circumstances warrant http://www.drudgereportArchives.com for updates (c)DRUDGE REPORT 2000 Not for reproduction without permission of the author |
