NO NATIONAL HOLIDAY for September 11
Say Most Americans - But Children Are In Favor
Most adult Americans do not believe Sept. 11th should be a
national holiday every year like Veteran's Day or Memorial Day, according to
a new TIME/CNN Poll featured in the magazine's "9/11 One Year Later" issue
on newsstands Mon., Sept. 2.
MORE
More adults were opposed (51% No, 44% Yes) in the TIME/CNN Poll. But
children do favor a national holiday, according to a TIME/TIME FOR
KIDS/Nickelodeon survey of 8- to 18-year-olds.
Nearly 1-in-3 (30%) adult Americans think about what happened on Sept. 11
daily, while almost equal numbers think about it several times a week (35%),
or a few times a month (27%). Only 6 percent of adults responded "hardly
ever," compared with 27 percent of children in the TIME/TIME For
Kids/Nickelodeon Poll.
Life changed for two-thirds (68%) of Americans after Sept. 11. Life has not
returned to normal for half (56%). A majority (54%) says the country will
never get back to normal (only 4% say it will).
This year on Sept. 11, most Americans plan to fly the American flag (80%),
pray (77%), have a moment of remembrance with family (70%), and watch TV
about 9/11 (68%).
More TIME/CNN Poll results:
* Most (67%) do not think a terrorist attack will occur in the U.S. on the
Sept. 11 anniversary - but feel an attack is likely in the next 12 months
(79%).
* Intelligence agencies failed in their responsibilities to obtain
information about the attacks last Sept. 11, according to a majority (65%).
Most (67%) believe the Office of Homeland Security is doing a good job of
making the country more secure.
* George W. Bush's response to the terror attacks was good, according to
most Americans (90%).
* In the presidential election of 2004, more Americans plan to vote based on
Bush's handling of the economy and other factors (61%) than his performance
in the war against terrorism (30%).
[The TIME/CNN survey conducted August 28-29, 2002 among 1,004 adult Americans
by Harris Interactive. The sampling error is plus or minus 3.1%. The
TIME/TIME For Kids/Nickelodeon survey was conducted Aug. 15-21 among 1,176
children 8-18. Its margin of error is +/- 2.9%.]
