ABC NEWS WARNS: DON'T LET DRUDGE BECOME OUR ASSIGNMENT EDITOR
A new warning has been issued by a credentialed corporate journalist! Beware the DRUDGE REPORT!
"Can't we all agree that we will check stuff out before we let Drudge become our assignment editor this cycle?" begged ABC NEWS political chief Mark Halperin Tuesday morning in The Note.
Halperin's lecture ["Reporters should know better...be more careful"] comes as political news moves from flatline to pulse in the coming seasons, and the race to be first and fresh with information voters will want to know intensifies.
On the eve of his trip to Dubuque, Iowa this weekend, this space featured quotes made by presidential hopeful John Kerry back in 1996.
"I hate going to places like Austin and Dubuque to raise large sums of money. But I have to," Kerry told the BOSTON GLOBE.
The unearthed quotes, which are found on the LEXIS-NEXIS service, ignited mild controversy, landing on Page One of the local Dubuque, Iowa newspaper -- two days running.
Cries that the quotes were taken out of context became the rage.
[Yes, if Kerry had said he hated going to places like Boston and New York City to raise large sums of money, residents of Dubuque would not have had any reason to raise their eyebrows.]
"But the question IS begged: who sent that to Drudge," ABC NEWS Halperin demanded to know. "Can't we all agree that we will check stuff out before we let Drudge become our assignment editor this cycle? Sometimes he is right, but sometimes?"
He does not wait for ABC NEWS to approve and certify the news.
