Friedman Memo To ABCNEWS Staffers

David Westin graciously has suggested I take this opportunity to tell you some news he and I have been developing.
For quite some time, I have been trying to figure out how I could do what we all hope for: to work at the things we love to do, and drop the other stuff. My experience producing the 9/11 anniversary coverage clinched it. It was as satisfying a professional experience as anyone could have, working with extraordinarily talented and caring people to produce 14 hours of television we could all be proud of while enjoying the work and serving a huge audience. I became more convinced than ever that after 35 years in this business, my interests were in news and production, not management.
The agreement David and I are announcing today, which makes me a senior news consultant rather than executive vice-president, allows me to continue doing what I love at ABC News, while using the rest of my time to teach at the university level and to pursue other projects in journalism that will not hurt ABC.
Although the agreement means theres no need to say goodbye, I will not be here fulltime, and so I want to take this opportunity to say something clearly, at once, to all of you. Although occasionally my behavior might have made you think otherwise, I have enormous respect and affection for so, so many of you -- and Im very proud of so much of what weve done together. There will be more.
Paul Friedman
