According to Nielsen Media Research data, "NBC Nightly News" was the most-watched network evening news program during the
February sweeps period, winning the month in all categories. During the
sweep, "Nightly News" averaged 11.683 million viewers, a 4% advantage or
391,000 more viewers than ABC "World News Tonight's" 11.292 million, and the
NBC News broadcast dominated the CBS "Evening News'" average of 9.477
million by 23% or 2.206 million more viewers. "NBC Nightly News" has now
placed first among total viewers for 16 of the last 17 sweep periods.
During the month of February, the Brokaw-led newscast had an 8.3
rating and a 15 share. ABC trailed with a 7.8/15 and CBS was last with a
6.7/12.
Among the key demographics women, men and adults 25-54, "Nightly
News" was also No. 1 in each category. Specifically among younger viewers
(adults 25-54), "Nightly News" posted a 3.8 rating, this represents a 9%
advantage over ABC's 3.5, and a staggering 46% lead over CBS' 2.6 rating.
"Nightly News" has now had its best delivery among women 25-54 since the
fourth quarter 2000, and has placed first among men 25-54 for 27 straight
sweeps, and first among younger viewers for 25 consecutive sweeps (including
one tie).
For the week of February 24 -28, 2003, "Nightly News" was No. 1
across the board. Among total viewers, "Nightly News" averaged 11.881
million viewers (8.3/15) for the week, ABC placed second with 11.308 million
(7.8/15), and CBS' "Evening News was third with 9.505 million (6.7/12). For
the week, "Nightly News" outperformed ABC by 573,000 viewers and CBS by
2.375 million viewers. This represents "Nightly's" best week (with a five a
day average) among total viewers since week two of the winter Olympics a
year ago (2/18/02). The Brokaw-led broadcast has now placed first among
total viewers for 20 of the 23 weeks this season.
