3,000 U.S. security agents to protect Bush in Bangkok
Wed Aug 28 2003 01:19:34 ET

Bangkok (dpa) - At least 3,000 American security agents will be deployed to protect U.S. President George W. Bush during a summit meeting in Bangkok, in addition to thousands of Thai police and military officers, news reports said Thursday.

Bush is due to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on October 20-21 along with the leaders of 20 other countries, prompting an unprecedented security clampdown in the Thai capital.

National police chief General Sant Sarutanond was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying ;every inch of Bangkok'' was being checked in advance of the meeting, including water pipes in the Chao Phraya River and drains beneath buildings.

Advanced contingents of the 3,000-strong U.S. security force were already training with Thai Special Branch Police and riot police, paying particular attention to the banks of the river snaking through Bangkok.

APEC leaders are scheduled to view a royal barge procession along the river on the night of October 20.

;They always mount this kind of security wherever the president goes, whether it's a visit to advanced countries like Germany or England or a less advanced country like Thailand,'' Sant said. ;The U.S. is a major target for terrorist attacks, so such tight security is understandable.''

Large teams of security agents are also to be sent by Russia and China to protect their leaders.

Along with thousands of security agents, high-tech measures are to be deployed, including ;laser fences'' around the leaders' jets parked at the Thai Air Force base north of Bangkok.

The laser beams are rigged to detect any intruding object or person near the planes.

Air Force Chief Marshal Kongsak Wantana was quoted as saying satellites also would be used to monitor security during the summit.
