Dear Mr. Blank,
I am writing about your plans to air the upcoming CBS miniseries > '> The Reagans> '> and am concerned that its portrayal of the Reagan presidency may not be historically accurate.
CBS announced that they will not run the program because in their words, 'it does not present a balanced portrayal of the Reagans for CBS and its audience. Subsequent edits that we considered did not address those concerns.'
For those same reasons we are respectfully making the same request of Showtime which we made of CBS.
The only proper thing to do is to correct the imbalance and have the program reviewed for historical accuracy or inform viewers that it is a fictionalized portrayal and not intended to be historically accurate.
I respectfully request that Showtime allow a panel of historians and people who know the Reagans to review the program for accuracy before it airs.
If you are unwilling to correct this acknowledged imbalance and review the program for historical accuracy, Showtime should inform its viewers through a crawl every ten minutes that the program is a fictional portrayal of the Reagans and the Reagan Presidency, and is not intended to be historically accurate.
Although CBS has stated the series 'features impressive production values and acting performances' we do not feel the quality of the acting or the production values can justify the imbalance of the presentation. I appreciate your attention to this important matter and look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Ed Gillespie
Republican National Committee Chairman
