Conference Call Today with Kerry Shoulder Doctor to Discuss Surgery
Mon Mar 29 2004 13:54:55 ET

John Kerry announced this weekend that he will undergo outpatient surgery on Wednesday, March 31st in Boston, Massachusetts to repair a tear in his sub-scapularis tendon in his right shoulder.

The tendon tear is the result of an injury that occurred last January on the campaign trail in Iowa when Kerry's bus stopped short. Kerry, who was standing up talking to the press corps, twisted his arm to balance himself. The tendon tear, which could lead to further shoulder injury if left untreated, causes sporadic pain and movement restrictions.

Dr. Bertram Zarins, Chief of Sports Medicine Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, will perform the outpatient procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital. During the procedure, which will take roughly an hour, John Kerry will likely undergo general anesthesia. He will go into the hospital Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m. and be released that afternoon. Kerry will wear a sling for up to a week, and will resume his public schedule this weekend.

Today, at 4:30 p.m. EST, Dr. Zarins will speak to reporters via conference call about the short surgery.
