Former Czech president says EU politicians out of touch with citizens

Ordinary people have trouble identifying with European Union because politicians today are too distant and out of touch, the former Czech dissident-turned-president Vaclav Havel said Monday.

"We live in times that are unique because, for the first time in history, we have a chance to build a united Europe on principle of solidarity" and without coercion, he said. "That's why Europe needs a new generation of inspiring leaders, leaders who would be closer to ordinary people."

Reacting to a recent EU poll in which only 48 percent of people called EU membership a "good thing," Havel said the bloc "is too often perceived as a bureaucratic body whose only aim is to regulate and impose quotas.

"There more to the EU than that, and politicians should explain this to people," he said in a speech at the European Policy Center, a Brussels-based think-tank.



"Nobody can take national identity away from us," said Havel. "Europe is extremely varied, there are huge differences between states and no supranational body can change that." Developing...
