 Support The DrudgeReport; Visit Our Advertisers  Former Czech president says EU politicians out of touch with citizens Mon May 10 2004 13:00:55 ET Ordinary people have trouble identifying with European Union because politicians today are too distant and out of touch, the former Czech dissident-turned-president Vaclav Havel said Monday. "We live in times that are unique because, for the first time in history, we have a chance to build a united Europe on principle of solidarity" and without coercion, he said. "That's why Europe needs a new generation of inspiring leaders, leaders who would be closer to ordinary people." Reacting to a recent EU poll in which only 48 percent of people called EU membership a "good thing," Havel said the bloc "is too often perceived as a bureaucratic body whose only aim is to regulate and impose quotas. "There more to the EU than that, and politicians should explain this to people," he said in a speech at the European Policy Center, a Brussels-based think-tank. "Nobody can take national identity away from us," said Havel. "Europe is extremely varied, there are huge differences between states and no supranational body can change that." Developing... |
