 Swede released from Guantanamo Bay to publish book on ordeal Tue Nov 16 2004 10:04:55 ET A Swedish national released last July from the US detention center at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and who claimed that he was tortured will publish a book about his ordeal, his publisher said on Tuesday. "The book will be about his experience," Per Axelson of the Leopard publishing house said. Axelson said no date was set for the book's release, but tabloid Expressen reported that it would be published in March. Mehdi Ghezali, 25, was arrested in December 2001 in Pakistan near the Afghan border and turned over to US authorities who then shipped him to Guantanamo in January 2002. He has argued that he was in Pakistan to study at a Koranic school, not to partake in terrorist activities. He has previously said that he plans to sue the United States and demand compensation. "I wanted to acquire more knowledge of Islam and to learn more about Islam," Ghezali said in July after his release. He claimed he was visiting a friend in Pakistan when local villagers captured him and sold him to Pakistani police, who then handed him over to the US. Once in US custody, Ghezali said he was subjected to a string of abuses, including being shackled for hours, sleep deprivation, no contact with the outside world, being forced to endure low temperatures for up to 14 hours at a time and attempts to humiliate him sexually. |
