NEW YORK POLICE PLAN SPY CAMERAS ON STREETS Mon May 30 2005 09:56:24 ET New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has told top police brass that he wants to put up about 400 surveillance cameras on high-crime and high-traffic streets, the NEW YORK POST reports on Monday. The cameras will not be monitored, but will record the action on high-quality digital tape to be reviewed later if a crime occurs in the area. The issue has sparked protest from civil-liberties groups who worry that the cameras will violate privacy while doing little to cut crime. A police spokesman would not confirm or deny the new video plan, but noted "the department uses video technology for investigations, crime deterrence and counterterrorism." Developing... |
