 Support The DrudgeReport; Visit Our Advertisers  STAPH INFECTIONS RAMPANT AT JAIL WHERE PARIS IS SERVING TIME Tue Jun 05 2007 09:50:52 ET Paris Hilton may be facing a serious threat at the Lynwood Correction Facility where she is currently serving her 45-day sentence for violating her probation. The women?s prison is rife with staph infection, with over 402 inmates diagnosed with the serious infection last year alone! For every 1,000 inmates that enter the facility, 13 will contract some version of this infection that is caused by the staphylococcus bacteria. Elizabeth Bancroft, an Epidemiologist for The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, spoke with INSIDE EDITION about the seriousness of the staph strain that is spreading through out the women?s prison. ?MRSA is a kind of staph infection that means it?s resistant to the first line of antibiotics we usually use to treat staph infection,? she continues, ?That is the kind that is so prevalent right now or so common in the jail.? Bancroft says staph infection is so rampant through out the prison due to several contributing factors. ?At this time it?s impossible to eradicate staph because it?s spread person to person. It can be asymptomatic and there is no vaccine.? Bancroft also tells INSIDE EDITION that staph infection can cause serious inflammation and even spread into the blood stream or bone which would then have to be treated by intravenous antibiotics. ?If the infection were to get to the blood or bone the first thing people would have would be fever chills and if it got into the bone they would have a lot of tenderness.? Bancroft tells Inside Edition preventative measures Hilton can take to avoid contracting the disease which can cause redness, swollen areas and abscesses. Bancroft says inmates should ?Maintaining good hygiene, wash hands, and change clothes when laundry services come around? Bancroft also tells Inside Edition Hilton is at a lesser risk than the other inmates of contracting the infection due to her serving out her sentence away from the general population. ?Anyone in isolation will have a less likely chance of contracting staph.? |
